History of Rutgers Capoeira
As one the country's leading universities, Rutgers University has much to offer due to its diverse students and faculty. Steeped in history, Rutgers not only is home to many different educational programs, but also many different athletic programs. The Rutgers Capoeira Club is proud to add to the richness of this university. Established in 1993, the Rutgers Capoeira Club is one of the first collegiate capoeira clubs run by students in the Northeast. Professor Maranhão first began practicing capoeira in 1997 with Mestre Cigano of Grupo Liberdade de Capoeira in Newark, NJ. A
few years after Mestre Cigano started a capoeira club at Rutgers
University in 1993, he asked Professor Maranhão to assist him in
teaching the growing group. Since 2002, Professor Maranhão has brought Rutgers students this beautiful and poetic martial art from its traditional Afro-Brazilian roots. At our club, we practice a contemporary style of capoeira, inclusive of both "Angola" and "Regional" styles, and is immersed in Brazilian culture through traditional songs as well as dances such as Samba de Roda and Maculele. We are very much interested in students who will help this program continue for years to come. In particular, we are looking for young men and women who share with the rest of the members the hard work, determination, and familial ties Capoeira asks of people all across the globe. For those select members who want to give a greater commitment to Capoeira, we have a nationally renowned instructor who will encourage and assist in any player’s desire to advance their career at any point during the year.
